With a profound dedication to education and uplifting underprivileged communities, Kerlin’s story mirrors Amigo Energy’s values. As we spotlight Kerlin, we delve into a heartwarming interview, unravelling her background, how she overcame adversity, and the transformative work she spearheads through her organization, The Courage to Bee

Where are you from, and how did your upbringing shape your aspirations?

I was born and raised in Colombia, specifically on the small island of San Andres. My parents and humble beginnings instilled in me a deep appreciation for education to break the cycle of poverty. I developed a dream of pursuing a master’s degree in a language foreign to my native tongue, which, unknowingly to me at the time, truly set the stage for my mission to create positive change.

What inspired you to seek out opportunities away from home?

Driven by a profound calling to make a difference, I ventured beyond my homeland to find a way to uplift youth in poverty. I envisioned mentorship, access to technology, and addressing fundamental needs as the pillars of transformation. Embracing both my identity as a woman and a professional, I courageously stepped out of my comfort zone, leaving Colombia at age 23 to pursue a master’s degree in the US. The life-changing journey fueled my strength, empowering me to eventually establish my organization, The Courage to Bee.

What lessons did you carry with you from your upbringing?

I brought courage, a sense of community, and an incredible respect for people from other backgrounds. My disciplined nature and resourcefulness, developed in the face of adversity, are the cornerstones of my character.

Did you face challenges when you left home?

The language barrier proved to be the most significant challenge for me. Striving for professional proficiency, I immersed myself in the culture, demonstrating my commitment to building a successful career.

When did you decide that Houston was home?

After initial experiences in New York, Virginia, and Florida, a friend’s invitation led me to Houston. My goal was complete immersion in American culture, a decision driven by the desire to learn the language and achieve my aspirations – and in Houston, that was possible.

Tell us about your organization, The Courage to Bee.

The inception of The Courage to Bee sprouted from my travels to the Dominican Republic, spurred by a deep connection to the country through a close friend. Throughout my travels, a recurring interest in diverse educational systems and community dynamics fueled my passion for change. In Santo Domingo, witnessing the educational disparities in one of the poorest communities ignited an undeniable desire to make a difference. In July of 2019, the idea was born.

The Courage to Bee is dedicated to empowering communities, drawing inspiration from the industrious and collaborative nature of bees. Our inaugural program, Mochilas for Bees, provides essential support, including basic needs and school supplies. I made my first trip back to the Dominican Republic in February 2020, marking the official start of my mission to better the lives of children. Since our launch in the Dominican Republic, we have proudly expanded to our local Houston community and by 2025, we will have programs running in Honduras and Colombia.

What other programs does The Courage to Bee operate?

Many! Our Technology for Bees Program is all about building classrooms, providing internet access, and setting up technology centers in underprivileged communities. I believe that even in the face of poverty, technology is a game-changer. It connects kids to the world, allowing them to dream and giving them opportunities. I hope by developing these skills, the children can land great jobs someday. Our Workshops for Bees focus on financial and tech literacy. Not only do we want to provide them with devices but show them how to use them.

In Houston, we concentrate on immigrants and minorities and we’re running Mochilas for Bees in the most impoverished areas to support these local children. Last year, we hosted Christmas at the Border for families who’ve crossed the border, believing strongly that nobody should spend the holidays alone. This year, we’re doing it again, spreading joy to 315 students and families in Houston and at the Texas border in McAllen.

Finally, we are helping a baseball league in the Dominican Republic, backing kids aiming to go pro. From staying in school to getting proper training equipment, we are there to help them focus on becoming the baseball stars they dream to be.

Why did you decide to create an NGO?

An NGO is a way to make a positive impact on my community. It is a way to create a beautiful ripple effect where those people we help today will help others tomorrow, building a stronger community. Life, to me, is about leaving the world better than I found it. With a focus on education and providing opportunities to those without, money becomes secondary to helping others.

What does the phrase “Don’t let anything dim your light” mean to you?

For me, it emphasizes resilience in the face of rejection and the belief that for every “no,” there are many “yeses” out there. We should never let others define what we are or where we want to go. Discipline, consistency, and the courage to overcome fear are key ingredients for achieving anything.
